Shrove Tuesday – better known as Pancake Day – takes place on the 5th March this year. Pancake Day marks the start of the 40-day period known as Lent, which historically was a period of fasting in the run-up to Easter and commemorations of the Crucifixion. Pancake Day was a sort of ‘last hoorah’, when people used up the last of the indulgent eggs and fats before beginning their period of fasting.
These days, Pancake Day is an opportunity to really treat yourself before giving up chocolate, alcohol or whatever other little vices you might indulge in! If you’re looking for celebration ideas and some pure indulgence, here’s how to celebrate Pancake Day in style in 2019…
Think International!
Britons tend to cook traditional pancakes and top them with lemon and sugar, fresh fruit or sometimes thick and gooey chocolate sauce. To shake things up, you could look at how the rest of the world celebrates.
Look to the other side of the pond and the Americans don't do pancakes by halves! Thick, fluffy American pancakes are usually served stacked and covered in a variety of toppings, from bacon and maple syrup to berry compotes with whipped cream. Perhaps slightly more delicate, the French crepe is thin and slightly crisp, and can be made either sweet or savoury. You could try stuffing yours with spinach and goat's cheese, or if you're really brave attempt a boozy Crepe Suzette.
The Russian equivalent of Pancake Day is known as Maslenitsa, and it’s a big celebration. This year London is playing host to a not-to-be-missed Maslenitsa festival, but if you can’t make it to the capital then there’s no reason to miss out. Russians normally feast on delicate little pancakes known as blinis, which are usually served with a range of mini sampling dishes. Caviar is perhaps the most well-known and well-loved, and can be paired with butter, grated boiled eggs, red onion and sour cream with chives.
If you do decide to opt for the delicacy of caviar, then there are all sorts of advantages when you buy from the manufacturer (fresh and best price). At Attilus, we pride ourselves on sourcing the very freshest sturgeon caviar and offering it to our customers at affordable prices, so whatever your budget you will find exquisite caviar well within your price range.
Whether you rustle up some traditional blinis or opt for your usual tried and tested pancake batter, we’d argue that few accompaniments are quite as indulgent as caviar with all the added extras. To order your top-quality caviar, simply look through our tasting guide, select the product you’re most tempted by and wait for us to deliver.
